The Portuguese capital offers all you could want historic neighbourhoods, much-loved cuisine and a touch of glamour - without breaking the bank

WHY GO?

Lisbon is an alluring contrast: among the oldest cities in Europe and yet a hotspot for tech start-ups and digital nomads. It’s in vogue right now and the interest is unlikely to cool soon. It’s easy to see why – there’s a collection of UNESCO-listed landmarks, a distinct, delicious culinary scene and year-round good weather (even winter days can reach 15C). Better yet, it’s affordable – especially compared to equally historic European capitals – and easy to reach at just a smidge under a three-hour flight from London or Manchester.

WHAT TO DO

Keep it cheap and admire Lisbon from one of the free miradouros (viewpoints) scattered around this hilly city. There are many, but Miradouro de Santa Luzia, in the ancient Alfama neighbourhood, is among the most beautiful, partly shaded by a pergola and with views over terracotta rooftops to the Tagus River.
