On the night of 6 October 1980, Reni travelled with his three drug addict companions by road from Chennai to Meenthalakkara village in Tiruvalla district of Kerala. As they had already hatched the plot, they murdered the aged and childless couple, K. C. George and his wife Rachel, who lived all alone in their Karikkanvilla house, after their return from abroad. After slaughtering his relatives, Reni and his accomplices looted the couples’ cash and valuables, carefully wiping away all traces of the crime.
After investigating the strange murder and theft, renowned police officer Siby Mathews arrested Reni George and his three accomplices, who confessed to the crime. The Additional Sessions Court at Mavelikkara sentenced all the four criminals to capital punishment. But considering his young age, the judge at the Alappuzha Sessions Court reduced the capital punishment to life imprisonment.
