"What's funny is the older I get, the sillier I've become," laughs Thai model-turned-actress Aokbab Chutimon Chuengcharoensukying as she muses about turning 30 next year. "I have the courage to speak up more and am braver about expressing my feelings to friends. My friends now get annoyed with my whimsies." The shoot's fancy dreamscape of pink mattress, swings and bubbles is indeed a snapshot of Aokbab's innermost inclinations. Unlike the brooding, pokerfaced characters she usually portrays on the catwalks and the silver screen, Aokbab is surprisingly quirky and vivacious.
"N000000000, not at all," she immediately squeals when asked if she had always taken an interest in fashion, having modelled since she was 15. "I wanted to become a doctor or psychiatrist. I also grew up with two older brothers, so I was quite rough and manly."
While working backstage for her high school's reunion party, Aokbab, which is the Thai verb for "design", was spotted by an alumnus who was a model. Thus began her journey into modelling. Her impressive body of work started early, which she refers to as "a lifetime ago" where she landed a fashion spread in Harper's BAZAAR UK at age 17. Her growing stature in the fashion scene eventually led to her being cast for the high school caper thriller Bad Genius (2017). Starring as Lynn, a sharp teenager who devises a business to help students cheat in exams, her feature film debut catapulted her to international acclaim and helped expose the world to Thai films beyond actor Tony Jaa's action flicks.
