A Comprehensive Guide to This Autoimmune Skin Condition

- Dr. Bhanu prakash

Lichen Planus

Lichen Planus can be a challenging condition, but with proper management and treatment, symptoms can be controlled effectively. By identifying triggers and following appropriate therapy, individuals with Lichen Planus can improve their quality of life and minimize discomfort.

Lichen Planus is a chronic inflammatory condition that affects the skin, mucous membranes, nails, and hair. It presents as purplish, itchy, flat-topped bumps and can cause discomfort, especially in its oral or genital forms. Though not contagious or life-threatening, it can significantly impact a person’s quality of life.

imageCauses

The exact cause of Lichen Planus remains unknown, but it is believed to be an autoimmune disorder where the immune system mistakenly attacks the skin and mucous membranes. Several factors may contribute to its onset, including:

  • Genetic Predisposition – A family history of autoimmune diseases may increase the risk.

  • Viral Infections – Some cases have been linked to Hepatitis C virus.

  • Medications – Certain drugs, such as nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), beta-blockers, and antimalarials, may trigger the condition.

  • Allergic Reactions – Sensitivities to dental materials, such as amalgam fillings, can contribute to oral Lichen Planus.

  • Stress and Anxiety – Psychological stress is known to exacerbate the symptoms in some individuals.

Symptoms

Symptoms vary depending on the area affected:

  • Skin – Purple, flat-topped, itchy bumps that may develop into white streaks (Wickham striae) and appear on the wrists, ankles, lower back, and genitals.
