A late starter on the hunting field who is still in love with the game in his 80s

AT 82, Barry Woolham may have retired from farming but he is still hunting with the Wynnstay and looking for a new horse: one that can gallop and jump. In fact, just recently he drove up to Northumberland to try one.

“Barry has always been a vital link between the hunt and the farming community,” joint-master and huntsman Richard Tyacke highlights as being one of Barry’s major contributions to the hunt, “because he is well-known and liked by most of the farmers in our country.”

Barry says: “I started in farming as cowman for Sir Edward Hanmer and 10 acres came with the job. I moved on to a 20-acre council holding and then to a larger 45-acre council farm. I tried to buy the farm next door, but the credit squeeze intervened, so I ended up finding someone else to share it with me.”
