The method of scoring could help owners make more informed decisions
A NEW scoring system capable of predicting the likelihood of a horse’s return to racing after a tendon injury has been developed.
The technique, which has been more than 80% accurate in research, means vets can take some of the educated guesswork out of prognosis after injury.
Although it has only been used on racehorses, there are hopes that by collecting data from different types of horse, the scoring model could potentially be useful for those competing in other disciplines in the future.
The study, led by vet Dr Rafael Alzola of Oakham Equine Hospital, was a collaboration between the practice, the University of Nottingham and the Hong Kong Jockey Club.
