Imagine it’s Christmas morning, everyone is huddled around the tree and giving presents. Suddenly, someone opens up their present and out jumps a puppy bursting with joy to see its new family. While this scene can be deemed as truly heartwarming, the grim reality is that not all pets given as presents will remain in the house for long.
Having a pet and responsibility go hand in hand. The reason why many animal welfare organisations do not encourage giving pets as gifts can be attributed to many reasons, but the most important is that animals are not toys; they are living beings that require love and care. Although giving pets as gifts usually comes from pure intentions, pets are huge commitments that should be taken very seriously by the gift giver and receiver.
One of the biggest issues with gifting pets to others is that just like us, animals have unique personalities that set them apart; thus, getting a pet without considering the recipient’s personality could be a recipe for disaster. Many people underestimate pets’ needs and whether they will be suitable with their human family’s lifestyle. For example, some breeds require more attention, while some need space to maintain an active lifestyle to stay healthy and happy. Meeting any particular pet one is considering to adopt is crucial in order to ensure compatibility.
