One of the main weaknesses of the E46 3 Series is the ability for the front wings to rust. This was doubly disappointing because the previous E36 had developed a bit of a reputation for scabby rust and the E46 seemed to be worse. The problem is a design fault. The front arch lip has too much of a return flange, and BMW&nbsp;deleted the rubber seal on the edge of the plastic arch liner resulting in the accumulation of road dirt and salt getting in there and being unable to escape. The result of this is the line of bubbles in the paint around the arch lip, and by the time this has happened, the rust has eaten through the thin steel and it&rsquo;s all too late. Forget about trying to repair them as well. It&rsquo;s true that you could remove the wing, grit blast the back of the arch and weld new sections in and, on the M3 where a new wing is a lot of money, that may be economic. But on the rest where a new pattern wing is &pound;30 or &pound;40 it&rsquo;s not worth the bother.Our guinea pig is a 2002 325i Sport Coup&eacute; that&rsquo;s only done 40,000 miles but which has the beginnings of wing rust &ndash; photo number one was a W-plate 318Ci Coup&eacute; that was rusty beyond belief. Rather than pay &pound;170 for a genuine&nbsp;wing, we risked a &pound;40 pattern wing. To be honest the quality was okay but not brilliant, and it required a bit of work to make it fit properly. On a &pound;600 car you can just bolt it on and paint it but this car was nice enough to warrant the effort &ndash; in many ways, the genuine wing would have been a better bet. BMW seem to have dropped the prices too &ndash; time was when a Coup&eacute;/Convertible wing was over 200 quid with VAT but now all BMW E46 wings both Coup&eacute;/Convertible and Saloon/Touring, facelift or early, are all &pound;141.79 plus VAT &ndash; not a bad price for a wing that is guaranteed to fit perfectly. Be aware that the face-lift dates on the E46 differ &ndash; the Saloon and Tourings (same wings for both) were face-lifted in September 2001, but the Coup&eacute; and Convertible wings (both the same as each other) were revised in March 2003. M3 wings are all the same as the model was never facelifted.We had our wing replaced by The Bodyshop in Sheffield (0114 279 5234) who charge around &pound;250 plus VAT to fit and paint a wing &ndash; they can supply a wing and prefer to fit a genuine panel but call them to discuss your requirements.
