Italy’s EICMA Show last November saw the start down the comeback trail of the least conventional, most dramatically individual series-production scooter yet made, with the debut of the all-new 2020 version of the unique Italjet Dragster. 70,000 examples of this trellis-framed two-wheeled testament to innovation, carrying hub-centre steering and radical styling, were built and sold between 1995 and 2003, before the Italian firm sadly went into liquidation, another victim like Malaguti and Garelli of bargain-priced imports from Taiwan and China. Its creator Leopoldo Tartarini, the genial, pipe-smoking company founder who passed away in 2015 after a lifetime of innovation, would surely be satisfied to see his iconic design brought back to the marketplace thanks to his son Massimo, 55, who’s responsible for creating the born-again Dragster.
