Back in 2009, when I was 17, I developed a passion for vintage cars.
It all started with the 1967 Chevy Impala from the famous TV series Supernatural. Whilst searching for classic cars my dad, Dougie, eventually found me my first car, which he paid a deposit for without even seeing the car. It was a 1964 Ford Cortina Mk1. This was one of my dad’s favourite back when he was a little boy. He chose to gift it to me for my 18th birthday, back in August 2010.
On the night of August 13th, my dad, my Uncle Siva, my cousin Strini, my friend Vicky and myself went on a road trip to Kroonstad to fetch the car. It was a memorable trip and we reached our destination early on the 14th. When we first saw the Cortina, it was a total nightmare and I never liked the car. However, I was convinced by my dad that it would be something that I would grow to love once I began work on it. My dad paid the balance of money owed on the car and all the paperwork was put into my name. We headed back home, which took double the time, due to the fact that we could only drive at 80km/h and when you hit the brakes, it sent the car into the oncoming lane! We eventually reached home safely that night and the car was then parked at a friend’s house due to me studying for my Matric year and if the car had been at home, it would have been a huge distraction.
