Clare Vale heads to Kimberley for a round of Supadrift and reflects on the recent road carnage.
I’m starting to hate deadlines. As I write this, we’re about to hit the road to Kimberley for Supadrift, so I’ll have all the news from Supadrift 01 in a few days’ time. With print deadlines always so far ahead of publication, though, you’ll have to wait for the next issue to find out what went down!
Speaking of road trips, the road safety statistics from the Easter weekend are horrific, as usual. An increase of 51% on last year, with 235 people dead, excluding the awful school minibus inferno that took the lives of 19 children. There seems to be no easy answer to the havoc on our roads – every year there are new initiatives but nothing really changes.
We avoid travelling over the Easter weekend. Fortunately, there is usually plenty to do in Gauteng, and it’s a bonus to have less traffic on the roads as well. That grand old institution, the Rand Show, was first held in 1894 and continues to attract visitors over 120 years later. It’s been good to see a strong motoring element at the Show over the last few years, and this year was no exception.
