HMS Lutine, a Royal Navy Frigate was lost in a North Sea storm in 1779 whilst carrying a large consignment of gold most of which has never been recovered. A navigational error caused her loss and the only tangible thing found on the wreck (allegedly) was the ship’s bell which now hangs in the trading hall at Lloyd’s of London, the world-renowned insurance giant. The bell is sounded whenever a vessel is reported lost anywhere around the globe.
When I first started driving wagons I planned my routes carefully, gradually building up a collection of trusty A to Z maps supplemented by a UK Road Atlas and a handful of city centre plans. I was never unsuccessful in reaching a delivery but sometimes had to resort to using my faithful CB or ask a local for directions. Funny how often you seem to get the person who is “not from round here.”
