If you haven’t spotted any Slambassador creations built by their head honcho and master fabricator, Denis Cunliffe, we can only assume you’ve been living off grid, welcome to the world.
Steve "Autoholic" Edwards
Kangaroo Jack
Most people will however be at least aware of the Slambassador name by now as their creations have been gracing show fields since Denis started the business a few years back. He created the Beetle powered T4, that was christened the B4 and resurrected a 1972 Bay from a burnt out shell that graced the cover of issue 120 of this very publication. Since then Denis has taken a grinder to it and turned it from a bus into a flatbed truck which is very useful for transporting the odd motorbike to events or for members of the Slambassador Social club to use as a makeshift seating area, he’s very thoughtful.

Den had always wanted to body drop an early Bay Window but was unsuccessful in convincing any of his customers that was what they wanted, so when the opportunity presented itself for him to do it to a 1970 bus he could use himself, he didn’t hesitate. It had been bought as a running project but it needed a lot of work to make it road legal, the original conversion had been done in Australia and it had been bought by a backpacker who wanted to explore down under, he loved the experience so much that before his return to the UK he put his purchase into a container and shipped it across the world. Upon its arrival to UK shores the bus was used for one camping trip but was then put to one side for one reason or another, it was left for six years before Denis spotted it on Facebook Marketplace and went to see it. Of course, he wasn’t put off by the amount of metalwork work required, as he had seen the potential already, and so the deal was done and the Bay was added to the growing collection of Slambassador vehicles.

Lance & Lisa Beaver tell the story of their...‘Old School' Westfalia Bay

The history of our bus is varied. I heard that it used to belong to a soccer player who lived in it for a while, and a tale of a cross country trip that was taken in it. Since we’ve owned it, we have been to numerous car shows with our car club Kahiko Kula and enjoy that immensely, but taking it camping is our joy.
