FIVE QUESTIONS: Richard Woods

Who were some of your boat-design inspirations?

My main inspirations were sailors more than designers. So, people like Rodney Pattinson, Reg White, Phil Weld, Paul Elvstrom, Robin Knox Johnston, Frank Dye, John Seymour, the Pardeys and others. I’ve been very lucky to meet all of them except Paul Elvstrom.

The two designers who inspired me were James Wharram and Derek Kelsall of New Zealand…but for the last 40 years, I’ve tried to do my own thing and not be that influenced by anyone in particular.

Do you have a favorite boat design, among all you’ve worked on?
