The Comeback Kid
Business Today Malaysia|December 2018

The personal may be political for some, but for many, the political became a little too personal, and then: 2018 happened.

The Comeback Kid

A toppling in May, criminal charges in July, multiple sackings of civil service and GLC heads disguised as (forcible?) resignations in the first 100 days, and in perhaps the first of its kind in Malaysian history, criminal charges brought against the wife of a former Malaysian prime minister.

Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad, at 93, was obviously quite busy from the morning of May 10, 2018 onwards.

All that leaves most breathless (and some skeptical) Malaysians with now is the question whether the venerable statesman has the will to reform government, institutions, processes and mindsets without exhausting himself and leaving us to wonder if his successor has the gumption, the charisma and the political will to finish what Tun M, as he is fondly known, has started.

THE YEAR THAT WAS

It’s been quite the dizzying run of events.

Despite implications being lobbed at former Malaysian Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak back in 2015 when multiple media outlets (Sarawak Report, Wall Street Journal, The Edge) broke the news about sovereign state fund 1MDB being unable to pay its debts and the complicated web of money laundering, the confluence of the fates converges at one unexpected, pivotal moment – May 9th, 2018, when Malaysians at home and abroad made every effort to cast their ballots.

No-one dared predict such a decisive outcome.

But before that, there were games afoot.
