In October 2017, I had the pleasure to attend three distinct and very important events -- IRSG Industry Panel Meeting, IRRDB Annual Conference and ANRPC Annual Meetings. To me, it was a great honor to be able to interact with such important and experience-rich crowd.
During some of my interactions, I noticed that there is still a big missunderstanding about the history of Natural Rubber cultivation.
Romantic & wrongful portrayal
When interacting with agents from the global NR industry, someone will always bring up the subject of the so-called “stolen seeds from Brazilian Amazon.” This is a subject that really bothers me, not only because it is far from being the truth, but because it casts a shadow on one of our greatest industry qualities.
In this regard, my problem with this (alternate) version of facts is that, when addressing our industry history as being a product of deception, one is not only creating misinformation about it but also failing to highlight all the good international cooperation that went into making rubber cultivation possible as we know it today!
There is solid historical data to show that the Brazilian Government was indeed fully compliant with the export of seeds of Hevea from the Amazon. The story of the “adventurous thief” seems to be nothing but a romantic and wrongful portrayal that later conveniently became official. This matter is addressed by Prof. Warren Deans book of 1987: Brazil and the struggle for rubber, a must-read for rubber history fanatics.

INDIAN NR MARkET GETS A BREATHER
After the recent spell of poor prices mainly on account of growing imports and lower international prices, the Indian natural rubber market is witnessing a resurgence of late. The trend is attributed to the slump in production in the major NR producing countries like Thailand and Indonesia due to widespread fungal infection in rubber trees. Against this backdrop, indications are that domestic prices are all set to bounce.
