Reinventing Marine Surveys

Since successfully piloting a remote annual survey for a Singapore-flagged harbour tug, PSA Marine (Pte) Ltd has been making plans to further embrace such digital marine surveys, especially during this COVID-19 pandemic period. Jointly conducted on June 22 by PSA Marine and Bureau Veritas Marine Singapore, and supported by the Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA), the project marked the first time a Singapore-flagged harbour tug, the PSA Aspen, has undergone a fully accredited annual survey that was remotely conducted without a surveyor being present onboard.

The remote survey was made possible by leveraging smart mobile devices and an optimised live-streaming application. Equipped with these digital aids, the crew onboard the LNG dual-fuel harbour tug communicated effectively and seamlessly with a surveyor located at Bureau Veritas’ Singapore office for the annual marine survey of classification and statutory requirements. Survey instructions were conveyed ‘live’ by the surveyor, who was able to view and record relevant images and videos in real-time. The survey report and archived survey material can be easily retrieved from Bureau Veritas’ electronic system.

“We are delighted to partner Bureau Veritas in piloting the first remote annual marine survey for harbour tugs in Singapore,” shares Mr Peter Chew, Managing Director of PSA Marine. “The innovative technologies used in the remote survey have enabled PSA Marine to complete our surveys on schedule despite COVID-19 while ensuring our harbour tugs continue serving our customers without delay or disruptions.”
