Normal is boring. We’re so accustomed to seeing romantic love being projected in a certain way that we can predict the moves a mile away. PYTs, with mush for brains, is the norm when it comes to depicting onscreen couples. Sometimes, they’re so saccharine sweet that their cuddling and cooing can induce a diabetic coma. But in recent times, there have been some films that have offered a different take on relationships, shaking away the slumber of stereotypes and sameness. Here’s taking a look at 10 films, which redefined onscreen jodis in the recent era and proved that relationships are more complicated than your average boy-meets-girl formula.
KI & KA (2016)
DIRECTOR: R BALKI
CAST: KAREENA KAPOOR KHAN, ARJUN KAPOOR
The film turned gender typing on its head. It depicts the misadventures of a young, married couple, played by Kareena Kapoor Khan and Arjun Kapoor, who dare to go against norms and thankfully survive. The film has Kareena playing a slightly older woman, who wants to make a name in the corporate world. Arjun plays a laidback character, who doesn’t have any qualms being a house husband. Their unusual equation leads him to become a motivational speaker for women’s rights. Ironically, this makes Kareena jealous as she suspects he’s milking their unusual situation to earn instant fame for himself. Eventually, sanity prevails and they unite again.
DIL DHADAKNE DO (2015)
DIRECTOR: ZOYA AKHTAR
CAST: ANIL KAPOOR, SHEFALI SHAH, PRIYANKA CHOPRA, RANVEER SINGH, ANUSHKA SHARMA, FARHAN AKHTAR
