DEVESH SHARMA
REMEMBERING RAAM LAXMAN

(SEPTEMBER 16, 1942-MAY 22, 2021)

No one today remembers the movie Hum Se Badhkar Kaun (1981) but the song Deva o deva Ganpati deva from the film is aired at full blast from every Ganpati pandal during the 11-day festival of Ganeshotsav. The film had music by Raam Laxman, who had the knack of coming up with hugely popular numbers from time to time throughout his career. If only he was consistent, he would have been counted as one of the greats of Hindi film music. Nevertheless, this shy, reticent composer did enjoy his share of popularity. Hum Se Badhkar Kaun had another good number, Dekho logon yeh kaisa zamana, sung by Asha Bhosle and Mohammed Rafi. It reminds one somewhat of Bappi Lahri’s compositions and was one of the last songs sung by Rafi.

Vijay Patil formed a partnership with Surendra Kadam and the two friends began their journey together in the ’70s as Raam Laxman
