As 2021 draws to a close, Melanie C AKA Sporty Spice is getting ready to watch how she fared on the latest series of The Voice Kids.
The 47-year-old mum – who joins Danny Jones, Pixie Lott and will.i.am as a coach on the ITV show – admits that she was “the emotional one” and became the “mother of the group” when we catch up on Zoom.
“When you become a mum, you feel very responsible for young people,” she says.
Mel – who has a daughter, 12-yearold Scarlet – goes on to tell us how much her mini-me inspires her and how being a parent impacted her coaching style on the series.
Here, she reveals what’s in store for her in 2022, how she reacts to getting starstuck by her idols, and shares secrets about a Spice Girls reunion…
Hi, Mel! We’re so excited to see you coach on the latest series of The Voice Kids, which will be festive themed this year. Were you excited to get the call? I’ve been waiting for this call forever! It’s a very special show and the level of talent we saw this year was amazing. I’m very, very grateful that Paloma [Faith] was a bit busy this year and I was able to step into her shoes [laughs.]
How would your mentees describe your coaching style? Well, I hope I was helpful [laughs.] I felt very responsible for these young people and I like to think they felt I cared and that it was nurturing. The show was packed full of kids with talent. I have one person in particular who springs to mind. This person could honestly be one of the greats of all time.
