The stars of Captain America’s latest silver-screen adventure tell Gary Jones there’s more to a superhero’s life than punch-ups and Lycra
Movie fans were out in dramatic force in April, when Marina Bay Sands welcomed the stars of Marvel’s Captain America: Civil War – one of the most highly anticipated Hollywood blockbusters of the year – to Singapore. Having jetted into the Lion City for the Southeast Asian premiere of the movie, actor Chris Evans, who plays the titular hero, was thrilled by the reception.
“Any time you come to Asia, people are very responsive, very appreciative, very excited,” said Evans, who was joined in his high-profile visit to the resort by Sebastian Stan (who plays the Winter Soldier in Civil War), Anthony Mackie (Falcon) and Joe Russo, who co-directed the film alongside his brother Anthony. “You really feel the enthusiasm and you feel the energy. It’s always rewarding.”
The much-anticipated sequel to 2011’s Captain America: The First Avenger and 2014’s Captain America: The Winter Soldier (both of which proved huge hits at the international box-office), Civil War finds Steve Rogers (the human face of “Cap” – a World War II veteran who was enhanced to the peak of human fitness and frozen in suspended animation for decades) leading a team of superheroic Avengers pledged to use their powers to defend humanity.
New legislation regulating super-activity, however, fractures the band of extraordinary brothers and sisters into rival factions: one led by Rogers, the other by billionaire playboy Tony Stark (aka Iron Man, and played once again by Robert Downey Jr). The Winter Soldier, Falcon, Black Widow (Scarlett Johansson), War Machine (Don Cheadle), Hawkeye (Jeremy Renner), Spider-Man (Tom Holland) and other champions of justice must now choose sides.
