There was a time when every air plane manufacturing company would aim to build a flying machine that would break the sound barrier. Breaking the sound barrier was not the challenge, but keeping it safe was. While many aeronautical engineers did manage to break the sound barrier with aplomb, the victory was noisy, and perhaps maddening to a certain extent.
