Rebirth returns the legacy to DC’s superhero line and looks forward to a bright future. Stephen Jewell talks to some of the key creators..
Designed to hark back to the company’s colourful past while telling new stories, DC Rebirth is the company’s latest revamp.
The controversial New 52 relaunch in 2011 wiped out decades of continuity and reset most titles to issue one in the name of freeing up creators and making the comics more accessible. Critics, however, suggested that DC had thrown the super-baby out with the bathwater. Something had to change.
This time, however, it feels different. DC are once again acknowledging their history with long-standing titles like Action Comics and Detective Comics reverting to their original numbering, with #957 and #934 respectively. Meanwhile other popular characters like Green Lantern and Wonder Woman have received their own Rebirth issues, which will continue on as twice monthly books. The early buzz has been extremely positive (and you can read our review of the opening roster on page 122). But what’s still in store? We contacted the creators behind some of the upcoming books to find out more...
RESTORING HERITAGE
“DC Comics is the oldest of all the comic book companies,” says Gene Luen Yang, writer of New SuperMan. “It’s long, rich legacy is one of its core strengths, so Rebirth is all about telling modern stories that embrace that legacy.”
