PTSD is looked upon with compassion and empathy in the 21st century because we know more about the dreadful psychological impact of war. In 1917, not so much. When Siegfried Sassoon, an officer in the British Army awarded the Military Cross for bravery, penned a pacifist statement titled Finished with the War: A Soldier’s Declaration, subsequently read out in Parliament, it was a potentially life-threatening moral stand. As a member of the upper set, Sassoon wasn’t shot at dawn for treason, instead strings were pulled and he was sent to Edinburgh’s Craiglockhart War Hospital to convalesce.
