He was a 36-year-old veteran recovering from brain surgery in November 1951, lying in a bed at what is now the Zablocki Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. He had just come out of a post-operative coma when something wonderful happened. A music lover, he was soon to meet one of his idols, Les Paul.
