Filmmaker Steven Soderbergh doesn’t shy away from tackling heavy-duty issues, such as the drugs trade in 2001 movie Traffic and the pollution of a city’s water supply by an energy company in 2000’s Erin Brockovich.

Now, for his latest movie, Netflix’s The Laundromat, the Oscar-winning director, 56, shines a light on how complex financial systems, including tax havens, help the rich and powerful prosper while ordinary people lose out.

Meryl Streep heads the cast as Ellen Martin, whose husband of 40 years, Joe (James Cromwell), and 20 others die in a boat accident. While dealing with her grief, Ellen discovers that the boat owners’ insurance policy is, unbeknown to them, fake.
