Could This Be Love?

We’d love nothing more than for crime fighting  Grantchester clergyman Sidney chambers to find happiness with his true love Amanda Hopkins.

Unfortunately, with Amanda (Morven Christie) still married to her well-to-do husband Guy, and Sidney (James Norton) married to the church, any such union would be severely frowned upon in 1950s Cambridgeshire.

At the start of this series, it seemed like lovebirds Sidney and Amanda were trying to make a go of things together, albeit largely in secret to avoid the disapproval of their neighbours. However, not wanting to be treated like the village outcasts, last week’s episode saw the emotional pair agree to remain just good friends.

Here, James and Morven reveal whether it’s really ‘over’ for good this time for Grantchester’s frustrated sweethearts…

Why did Sidney and Amanda recently decide to call time on their potential relationship?

Morven: Amanda and Sidney are very close; they have what I’d call a ‘vanilla’ relationship.

She’s very happy living in a little cottage in the village with her baby daughter Grace, but she’s in a really complicated situation with her husband, Guy, who she is trying to get a divorce from. In 1955, you had to have a reason to get divorced, and when Amanda spoke to a solicitor for advice recently, she got a bit of a shock as to how that journey was going to go.

James: At the start of this series, Sidney and Amanda were having a great time, but they were resisting or denying the impending decision: if Amanda divorces Guy she can’t marry Sidney, and she can’t have a relationship with Sidney unless he leaves the church. So it set up this whole ‘duty versus love’ conflict.
