As Downton Abbey’s firm but fair Mrs Hughes (later Carson), Phyllis Logan was a bastion of calm amid all the high drama. But her latest role as slightly scatty Linda Hutchinson in Kay Mellor’s drama Girlfriends is poles apart from the capable housekeeper.

‘Linda is completely different from Mrs Hughes, but I’ve enjoyed playing a bit of a hippie!’ laughs Phyllis, as she chats to TV Times.

Linda has struggled since her husband Micky (Steve Evets) apparently drowned while they were on a cruise. But now more questions are being raised about his death. Here, Phyllis, who turns 62 on 11 January, tells us more…
