WINTER WALKS
NEW MON-THU / BBC4 / 7.30PM / EPS 1-4 of 4 / FACTUAL
Mum-of-nine Amanda Owen, 47, is the star of Channel 5’s popular series Our Yorkshire Farm
Are you a keen walker, Amanda?
As a shepherdess, I tend to walk everywhere, but it’s always for a reason – I have to go to fix a fence on the farm or rescue an animal – so it’s never for pleasure.
Winter Walks really appealed to me because, although I live in a beautiful area, I’m guilty of never really exploring it.
What can you tell us about the walk you take?
It was a five-mile trek across hills and fields through Wensleydale and Raydale, not far from where I live at Ravenseat Farm in the Yorkshire Dales.
It was an ancient route made by the Romans and when you’re walking it, alone, you can’t help but think of the passage of time and how temporary we all are. It’s a timeless environment. We’re fleeting custodians.
Any special finds on your walk?
Fossils! A crinoid fossil from millions of years ago that I accidentally spotted when I stopped for a cup of tea and a biscuit. Amazing!
