Translating Classic Literature to the Silver Screen Is No Small Undertaking, but Here’s a List of Modern Adaptations That Their Original Authors Would Approve.
In the book: When world war 1 veteran Nick Carraway chances upon the lavish lifestyle of his dirt-rich neighbour Gatsby, he didn’t expect to be the first and only one to receive an invitation to one of his extravagant parties. and he certainly didn’t expect to title his memoir – a tale of love, empty wealth and betrayal – The Great Gatsby.
On the screen: An irrefutable classic that had its fair share of adaptations, The Great Gatsby was everywhere from theatres to cinemas, ballet to opera, radio to computer games. The 2013 version had Leonardo DiCaprio bringing Jay Gatsby to life, proving its box office prowess by becoming the highest-grossing movie in director Baz Luhrmann’s lifetime. While it’s probably not the best choice for the ‘old sports’, it’s still a masterpiece to behold – one stacked with visual splendour, beautiful narration and an a-list soundtrack at that. Well, the least we can all agree on is that Leonardo throws the best parties!
