Ringlets, Coils And Tightly Wound Waves Are Back In A Big Way

When my colleague told me she was watching Sex and the City for the first time, I had mixed feelings. At first, I was surprised because I had assumed everyone had seen it (then it occurred to me that my work friend was a newborn when the series aired). But I also felt envious. As a sometimes-single young journalist, that program was formative for me during my twenties (admittedly I watched the re-runs as well), so it’s thrilling that someone gets to see it with fresh eyes. That opening scene of Sarah Jessica Parker as Carrie Bradshaw in a pink tutu getting splashed by a passing bus is so iconic, and I can’t help but wonder whether it’s because of her seriously curly hair. It was long, voluminous, highlighted in all the right places, and seemed so wonderfully unique compared to anything else we were seeing on our screens. And in many ways, Carrie’s hair and all its perfect imperfection defined her character: a woman making her own way in the world. For the next decade (or more), women wanted to be just like Carrie.
