Ballooning To Slim Down

Gastric procedures all work in one of two ways, either via restriction (to limit the amount of food the stomach can hold), or malabsorption (bypassing part of the small intestine to reduce the amount of calories the body absorbs). The gastric balloon has grown in popularity as a non-surgical alternative to gastric bypass surgery or the gastric band. Since 2015, the gastric balloon has regained some ground as a non-surgical weight loss alternative.

Short-term remedy

The gastric balloon, or stomach balloon, offers a short-term weight-loss option by creating a feeling of fullness after small meals. The balloon is an inflatable medical device temporarily placed in the stomach.

The procedure itself takes no more than 20 minutes to place the balloon endoscopically and is removed in a similar fashion within six to 12 months. The balloon is then filled with saline fluids – the volumes adjected according to the patients’ symptoms, needs, and weight loss journey.

On the website of one of the world’s main brands in gastric balloons (which also distributes these medical devices in South Africa and surrounding countries), it states that its intragastric balloon weight loss program is “proven to help patients experience 3.1 times more weight loss than diet and exercise alone. It also advocates to provide the right tools and resources to successfully learn to keep it off.” “This gastric balloon assists

in a lifestyle change, to lose the weight and keep it off,” the company’s marketing manager explains. “Although, some responsibility falls onto the patient; such as making sure they see an exercise coach, dietician and anyone else their doctor recommends, some patients may also need to see a psychologist to help them attain a healthy relationship with food.”
