AN ANIMAL-LOVING TAM BRAM

My dad was a captain in the merchant navy and my mum is a housewife. Dad passed away two years ago due to a heart attack.

I come from a South Indian family. Not meaning to stereotype but in Tamil Brahmin families, children are raised to be over achievers. So from a young age, I was put into dance, music and drama classes. I used to stand first in class every year and excelled in sports too…

As a kid, I would see my mother play with stray cats, cows, and rescue wild birds. Now, when I see an animal in distress, I immediately go to help out! Being fearful because we are humans and they are animals is an alien concept to me. I feel one with nature and animals because of the environment I was brought up in.

My parents, I must say, gave me the best gift - the gift of the freedom of thought. I never had a curfew and neither was I told I couldn’t do something because I was a girl. Even when we work out, my mother, who is my trainer, has NEVER said, ‘Don’t do this because you’re not strong enough’. My parents never discriminated on the basis of gender. They also taught me not to lie. My mum is blatantly honest, and she has taught me to be brave enough to always speak the truth.
