A TRIBUTE TO APRIL ASHLEY

1935-2021

The evidence suggests that the doctors in the gender-change clinic in Casablanca did a really good job on one George Jamieson when more than 60 years ago he cast off his merchant seaman male-persona medically and became April Ashley. She became a Vogue model, lover to the stars (including Omar Sharif, Peter O’Toole and Michael Hutchence), the wife of an aristocrat, and a friend of the Beatles, John Prescott, and many Oxford students.

April was able to ‘fool’ everybody - for a time. According to her biographer Douglas Thompson: she said of Salvador Dali - “He was excited by me”; Omar Sherif – “We were mad passionate lovers”; Bob Hope - “He didn’t crack one joke!”; Rex Harrison – “he just had sadness in his eyes”; Fellini wanted her in his next film; Paul McCartney – “He really had his eyes on me”; And Even Michael Hutchence – “He stared intently into my eyes”!... They all became part of our TS heroine’s bizarre fairy-tale life.
