A century ago, up to 12 million of the world’s heaviest land mammals roamed the earth. Today, there are only about 500,000 left. Despite a 1990 ban on international trade in ivory, and even a decreased demand for animal tusks over the past few years, these majestic animals are alarmingly close to extinction.
In October 2019, our HER Planet Earth (herplanetearth.com) all-female team had the great privilege of travelling from Singapore to trek 100km with Samburu warriors in the Karisia Hills of Northern Kenya. The Samburu are nomadic pastoralists who have lived harmoniously with nature in this region of Kenya for centuries. Following patterns of rainfall in search of fresh pasture and water for their cattle, camels, goats and sheep, they’ve developed a special relationship with the environment – a biocultural landscape that promotes both Samburu culture and biodiversity.
Long treks and wild lands
During our week-long sojourn in this remote part of Kenya, we witnessed incredibly stunning landscapes and ever-changing scenery. Climbing up to 2,550 metres above sea level, we passed everything from dry deserts and rocky volcanic terrain, to lush green forests and meadows. Our full safari train was made up of 28 transport camels loaded with tents and supplies. By our side was an armed Samburu escort composed of proud local warriors, trackers and rangers.
