The hit show’s anti-heroines reboot are reframing the way we see women on TV – and we can’t look away.
Once upon a time, Hollywood thrived on women fighting, whether that was on set or on screen. There’s a reason why Bette Davis, Joan Crawford, Dynasty’s Krystle and Alexis and the entire female cast of (the OG) Melrose Place hold a special place in the hearts of drama fans. But the tide has turned thanks to UnReal, where women can bicker and bitch but still be besties and bosses who get stuff done.
The popular series may be about people seeking romance on reality TV, but strip away the supporting cast who are treated like puppets by hot mess TV producer Rachel (Shiri Appleby) and acid tongued executive Quinn (Constance Zimmer), and the show’s true heart is exposed. This show-within-a-show is a story about strong, powerful women, and season three resembles a women’s-only space, albeit one that’s more Fight Club than The Baby-Sitters Club.
