The country goes into full bloom for the Mary month of May!
Did you know that the long held and well-loved tradition of Flores de Mayo, Spanish for “Flowers of May,” also goes by the name Flores de Maria? It seems only fitting since Mother Mary plays a central role in this bright and colorful festival of flowers.
Why do we celebrate Flores de Mayo?
All over the world, the entire month of May is filled with special observances, devotions, and traditions held in honor of the Blessed Virgin Mary. In the Philippines, this time takes on a vibrant and festive mood with Flores de Mayo. The custom is believed to have originated in the mid-1800s when the Vatican proclaimed doctrines about the Immaculate Conception. It is said to have started in Italy, and was introduced to the country by the Spaniards.
