For more than four decades, Bert and Patti were aussie Showbiz Royalty

Bert and Patti Newton were an entertainment industry golden couple, with their marriage captivating Aussie hearts for almost 47 years. However, the origin of the showbiz couple’s relationship stems back even further, with the first signs of their enduring partnership in place from as early as their teenage years.

Bert first crossed paths with Patricia McGrath as child stars in the Melbourne radio scene. The natural performers had both been identified as future talent and were introduced via their on-air association.

In a sign of things to come, the pair’s next career move mirrored one another, with both Bert and Patti accepting roles at Channel 7.

At that stage, the association was friendly but professional, with the pair staying in touch throughout their late teens and early 20s.

A career opportunity in the UK came knocking for Patti. But before she departed, she held a 21st birthday party – and made sure Bert was on the guest list. Upon reflection, Bert has admitted this was the precise moment that he knew Patti was the one.
