When it comes to treating any eye condition, early detection is vital. OPSM optometrist Elizabeth Kodari explains what to look out for.
GLAUCOMA
Glaucoma is caused by damage to the optic nerve, so your field of vision becomes narrower. You can have open- or closedangle glaucoma. “Although loss of visual field can be a warning sign of open-angle glaucoma, it isn’t until the condition is quite advanced that patients may notice any changes,” Elizabeth says. This means it’s essential to keep up your regular eye checks.
“In closed-angle glaucoma, many patients may experience a painful and sudden loss of vision,” Elizabeth adds. “Other early warning signs include blurry vision, haloes around lights, headache, nausea or vomiting. As symptoms can occur suddenly, it’s important that you see your optometrist as soon as possible.”
