Is It The End Of ‘Lalu'dom?
SOCIETY|February 2018

He was every stand up comic’s delight and a cartoonist’s favorite, but the mass leader of Bihar, Lalu Prasad Yadav, ruled the state for several years.

Is It The End Of ‘Lalu'dom?

He was the CM of the state from 1990 to 1997 and had to step down due to graft charges in the fodder scam. The nation was left shocked at the enormity of the fraud. It involved huge embezzlement of government funds in the name of procuring cattle feed. Lalu had no choice but to step down from the CM’s chair, but not before craftily naming his rustic wife Rabri Devi as the ‘proxy’ CM. This period, from 1997 to 2005, the state was plagued by events of goondaism and hooliganism.

Lalu Prasad Yadav born on 11th June 1948, and in his political stint, served as the President of the Rashtriya Janata Dal, the Union Minister of Railways, and an MP of the 15th Lok Sabha. His political journey began at the Patna University as a student leader when in 1997, he was elected as the youngest member of the Lok Sabha as a Janata Party candidate at the age of 29. His stint as a politician has been riddled with highs and lows, and numerous controversies.
