Goa and its people have never shied away from showing their love for football. Driving through the state one finds children and adults playing the sport in barren lands or fields with small makeshift goalposts. Especially during the monsoons, football evokes a different feeling altogether.
When the Indian Super League (ISL) was formed, Goans found the perfect way to showcase their love for the sport through their team FC Goa.
In no time, FC Goa evolved from being just a club to an entity that united people who loved the sport. Part of the credit goes to club co-owner Akshay Tandon who has repeatedly shown immense faith in the team and continues to support them through every hurdle.
Besides maintaining his calm during the chaos that happens during the ISL, Tandon also carries out a lot of development work in the name of the club. The development is focused mainly on the youth and the sport in Goa.
Tandon aims to put Goans at the global level in football and believes it can be achieved only when we identify and nurture talent among youngsters.
He gets candid with VIVA GOA about various aspects of football in Goa, the upcoming seasons of ISL and more.
FC Goa has won plenty of supporters over six seasons. How do you build on this success story? We are blessed to have a passionate bunch of fans who love the club and show their support for the team. They support the team at away matches around the country, receive our players and coaches from the airport, attend all our friendly matches, and even club events like jersey launches.
I believe the next step for the club would be to translate this passion for the club from within Goa to across the country as well. We want Goa to be everyone’s favourite team. Not just because of how consistent we are, but also because of our values, our focus on youth development and of course, our aggressive style of football.
