Preston Innovations-backed England international Des Shipp explains why approaching your peg in contrasting ways is the key to successfully targeting a bag of commercial bream.

Opposites Attract

Commercial fisheries offer someunbelievable silver-fish sport allyear round, with skimmers andbream popular target speciesfor many pole anglers. Manor Farm Leisure in Evesham is no different and gives anglers a refreshing mix of target species, with skimmers often making up a large part of many anglers’ catches. We join Des Shipp on Peg 3 of Middle Pool as he shows us how to best approach a typical commercial fishery when targeting our slimy friends…

THE BAIT TRAY

The bait is nice and simple. I have 2mm Fin Perfect pellets that I have soaked for a minute, drained the water off and left for around half an hour. I’m trying to catch skimmers and bream, so I want them to be enticingly soft.

I also have 4mm Fin Perfect pellets. I’ve soaked these for 10 seconds and then drained the water off. I did this almost as soon as I arrived, meaning they soften right through and even allow me to use them on the hook.

I have also pumped 4mm expanders using the Preston Innovations Super Pellet Pump, probably half a pint in total, giving me plenty for the hook as well as being able to put them in as loose feed.

A few 6mm expanders also grace my side tray and make a great change bait. Even when it’s hard a 6mm can catch you a bonus bream.

In terms of groundbait, I like Sonubaits’ Match Method Mix when used in conjunction with pellets. It is a fishmeal mix with a lot of grounddown pellets in it, perfect for what I’m doing. This is going to be fed long on the more positive of my two lines at 14.5 metres.
