Get Ready For ‘Tomsula Time'
Redskins Warpath|September 2017

Jim Tomsula, the Washington Redskins new defensive line coach, is a throwback without being old fashioned. He’s old school while working in new-school techniques and considered to be one of the leading defensive line coaches in the NFL.

After a year out of the game, on a highly-paid forced vacation by the San Francisco 49ers, Tomsula found himself ready to return to his roots on the east coast and back home, coaching the unit he lives for.

“I love coaching defensive line. There’s no secret to that,” Tomsula said. “Figure out what you love and that’s what I love.”

The Homestead, Pa. native was fired after one year as the head coach of the 49ers in 2015. Sure, he was a surprising choice to be hired to replace Jim Harbaugh because many around the NFL didn’t know who he was.

However, some important people did. Tomsula served as the 49ers interim head coach when they fired Mike Singletary. He was retained by Harbaugh and his defensive line was always the stalwart of a tough, physical and feisty defense that San Francisco brought to the table.

When you would talk to league insiders and connected people in the business, they would always bring up Tomsula as an under-the-radar coaching stud. Then Harbaugh was ousted and after a multiple-week search, he became the permanent head coach that he was predicted to be.
