Shutting down the high-octane Dallas Cowboys offense is no simple task, but the New York Giants defense accomplished it and then some, earning a 10-7 victory by holding Dallas to just 260 yards and 13 first downs.
They got by, however, with a little help from their friend, punter Brad Wing. Of his nine punts from that thriller, Wing downed the Cowboys inside their own 20 five times, making the already gargantuan task of facing the Giants defense all the more difficult. Two of those five times, Wing pinned the Cowboys inside their own 5.
For his efforts, Wing was awarded with the NFC Special Teams Player of the Week award, the first Giant to do so since Josh Brown during Week 9 of the 2015 season. Overall on the evening, he averaged 43.2 yard on his punts, totaling 389 yards.
“It’s the first time it has happened, so I’m excited,” Wing said. “I don’t think it’s an individual award. Dwayne Harris, he did a great job covering, Zak (DeOssie) did a great job snapping the ball. It was really a group effort and it’s always good to be acknowledged for that.”
