We talk about Earth Day every time April is around. And it has been like that since 1970. A lot of us around the world get together and celebrate on April 22. But, why do we limit ourselves with acts of conservation and related events only on that day? Why don’t we take it ahead and do it every single day of the year?
With the global pandemic of Coronavirus disease (COVID-19) engulfing the entire world, the need to protect and take care of the planet's inhabitants and the environment is more than ever. Studies and scientists alike have warned of extreme consequences to human civilization if we carry on with the business-as-usual approach. Many different species are facing the threat of extinction and the only livable planet we know is changing rapidly.
However, the COVID-19 pandemic should not shut us down for a very long time. Instead, it reminds us of what’s at stake in our fight for the planet. The Earth Day hopes that each and every individual of the planet should come forward and revisit their obligation towards nature. To begin with, it can be done in one of the simplest ways of just switching off all the non-essential lights for an hour. With the global COVID-19 crisis looming large, this year the Earth Hour was celebrated digitally by World Wildlife Fund (WWF) between 8.30 p.m. and 9.30 p.m. on Saturday, March 28, 2020. Amidst the COVID-19 global pandemic, Earth Day will take a new turn this year by relocating to the Internet. Due to the global coronavirus pandemic, events for the 50th anniversary of Earth Day on April 22 will be digital. Not just that, a lot of celebrities, environmentalists and political leaders will offer their support online for nature and people.
