As he celebrated winning Wimbledon for the eighth time, Roger Federer kissed the trophy as if it were an “old flame”, said Martin Samuel in the Daily Mail. And in many ways, that’s just what it is. With his victory over Marin Cilic on Sunday, the Swiss player broke the record for Wimbledon men’s singles titles; he has now won 19 Grand Slams, four more than any other male player. Less than a month short of his 36th birthday, Federer is the oldest Wimbledon winner in the Open era, and “if anything, he is getting better”: for the first time, he made it through the tournament without dropping a set, a feat last achieved by Björn Borg in 1976. There can be no doubt, after this, that he is “the greatest player Wimbledon has seen”.
