Labour leader Sir Keir Starmer claimed a blink-and-you’ll-miss-it victory over the hard-Left in his party with his watered-down voting reforms but that was completely drowned out by the continuing resistance of Corbynistas.

Andy McDonald, Labour’s employment spokesman, quit over Starmer’s refusal to back his demand for an eye-watering £15-an-hour minimum wage.

“After 18 months of your leadership, our movement is more divided than ever,” said McDonald, “and the pledges you made to the membership are not being honoured”.

Deputy Leader Ms Rayner shored up her support among the Hard-left with a late evening rant at Tory “scum”. Class war is meat and drink to Labour activists but doesn’t play well to the rest of the country that is well past that kind of 1980s invective.
