Sentiments ran high against the contentious Citizenship (Amendment Bill) in Assam on Thursday, as people came out on the streets despite inconveniences caused by the imposition of a curfew on parts of the state. At least two persons died due to bullet injuries after police opened fire on protesters in Guwahati, officials said.
An official of the Gauhati Medical College and Hospital told PTI that one person was “brought dead” and another succumbed to injuries while undergoing treatment.
The official, however, could not give their names, saying that “they were brought unidentified.” As the day wore on, a large number of people assembled at several places in the state capital, many holding placards and raising slogans against the emotive legislation.
An indefinite curfew has been imposed in Guwahati, Dibrugarh, Tezpur, and Dhekiajuli, while night curfew is in force on Jorhat, Tinsukia, Golaghat and Charaideo districts.
Internet clampdown
Suspension of internet services in 10 districts of Assam was extended for 48 hours on Thursday, beginning 12 pm, to prevent “misuse” of social media to disturb peace and tranquility, and to maintain law and order, officials said.
Internet services will remain suspended in Lakhimpur, Dhemaji, Tinsukia, Dibrugarh, Charaideo, Sivasagar, Jorhat, Golaghat, Kamrup (Metro) and Kamrup, Additional Chief Secretary (Home and Political department) Sanjay Krishna told PTI.
Internet services were suspended at 7 pm on Wednesday.
