The WHO’s new guidelines on air quality standards, released last week is not legally binding for countries. But the new benchmark of clean air will, at least, push them to ratchet up their own ambition of tighter norms using this as an evidence-based reference tool to reduce impact of toxic air on human health. More than 90% of the global population continue to live in areas where the concentrations of the most hazardous pollutant, ultrafine particulate matter (PM2.5), exceed even the comparatively lighter standards set 16 years ago.
