New Delhi: Amid renewed efforts to boost bilateral ties, visiting Sri Lanka foreign minister G L Peiris said Monday India’s strategically located Indian Ocean neighbour will under no circumstances allow itself to be used by any country to imperil the security and well-being of India.
Following a meeting with foreign minister S Jaishankar, Peiris told TOI in an interview there was no risk of Sri Lanka allowing its assets to be passed on to China or any other country because of the so-called debt crisis it is facing. Peiris, however, added that Sri Lanka had benefited from its participation in BRI.
India has been concerned about China’s activities in Sri Lanka, particularly in the northern areas where the Chinese embassy has been reaching out to local communities, and the alleged Lankan pivot to Beijing under the Rajapaksas.
